Word 2007 Outline View: Need to see images.

How do I see images in Outline View with a DOCX in Word 2007 SP2?

I use Word habitually for journaling my work process, creating reference
documents, client work journals, etc. The ability to quickly collapse to
level 2 for a quick scan for a topic is invaluable.

I also routinely use the Snipping Tool or screen print to capture images of
my work to paste directly into the Word doc. All very easy until Word 2007
DOCX. I cannot find a way to display images in Outline view. I can see
them in Print Layout, in Web View, in Page View.. But I cannot see them in
Outline or Draft (Normal) view.

Yet if I save a DOCX as a DOC, the * immediately * the images appear in
Outline and all other views. Reopen is not necessary, they just show up once
in “compatibility†mode.

I’ve been through the Word Options
| Display |
Check "Print drawings created in Word" and
Check "Print background colors and images"
| Advanced | "Show document content" section
Check "Show background colors and images in Print Layout view" and
Check "Show drawings and text boxes on screen", and
Clear the "Show picture placeholders" box
| OK.

I’m through experimenting. I’ll stick to a .DOC format to solve my
problem.
I’m posting here to document what I view is a problem in Word 2007 Outline
that is baffling someone who uses outline daily for at least the past 10
years.

Baffled,

Stephen has raised important point below. Do any of the MVPs have comment or
suggestions on how to handle this aspect of Word 2007? I use the outline view
in a way similar to Stephen and also find this to be more than just an
annoyance, its fundamentally changing the way that I work in Word.

Best Regards,
Duncan

There's at least one way to solve the problem, and it also works for Draft
view. If you have Visio, paste the image into a Visio drawing. Click outside
the image to deselect it (this step might not be necessary). Select the image
and copy it. Return to the Word doc, select Home | Paste | Paste Special |
Microsoft Visio Drawing Object. Cumbersome, but it works. And of course, it
requires another MS app, Visio.
