Just a thought..

Why not put NEW and OPEN on the quick access toolbar as a DEFAULT?

unless they're hiding on one of the ribbons somewhere, I think that when you
open an application those are the two most common buttons you'd be looking
for.

Customize the quick access toolbar and you have the options you want as
default.
But, click on the microsoft logo just above the 'paste icone' and you find
all the options you want which you found in word 2003 under 'file'.

Hi Laurie,

Adding the New/Open choices to the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) is a reasonable suggestion :) You can read and participate in
discussions about the design decisions at the 2007 Office System User Interface (UI) team blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh

Don't forget to use the Office 2007 Feedback tool, Send-a-Smile, to send your suggestions (and why you think that's a better
solution) directly to the MS team.
