Yes. Click your Office Button, select Word Options, and then select the Save
tab. Change "Save files in this format". Select the .doc format from the
combo box.
I would also encourage your friends to install the compatibility pack since
that will allow them to read the .docx files incase someone else sends them
to them. (

I have Office 2007 on my machine, all my friends have legacy Office
installations on theirs. Is it possible to have Word 2007 save .doc as
default rather than .docx? Thanks
