Word 2007 text Placeholders

The brackets are Word bookmarks. Make sure the bookmark isn't being used as
a reference. Otherwise, deleting the bookmark will break the reference. Word
will not warn you if it's being used otherwise. So, you need to be aware of
why it's there and if it's serving any purpose.

If it's serving a purpose but you can't stand to see it, then hide
bookmarks. To hide the display of bookmarks, choose Office - Word Options -
Advanced - Show document content section, and remove the check next to Show
bookmarks.

If the bookmark isn't being used as a reference and you really want to
delete it, click between the brackets, then click the Bookmark tool in the
Links section of the ribbon's Insert tab; the current bookmark should be
selected, and you can click Delete to zap it.
