Word 2008 cannot crash when saving to older format

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Hi,

Serious problem:
When trying to save a document (.docx) to Word 97-2004-document (.doc) Word 2008 crashes and the document is not saved. The result is that I cannot share my work with other people at work.

I have checked the docx-document for compatibility, and word reports no problems.

Any sygestions?

Hello Eldar -

Obviously that shouldn't be happening, so check the fundamentals first:

Repair disk permissions,
Make sure Office is up to date (12.1.2)
Apply the OS X 1.5.4 COMBO update
Repair permissions again.

Keep in mind that the programs don't Save - they simply direct the command
to the OS that something needs to be written to disk. Somewhere outside of
the application that process is failing.

I'd also be interested in knowing why you believe you need to save as .doc
in the first place. Any version of Win Word 2000 or later as well as Mac
Word X or later should be able to read/write to .docx files if the software
has been appropriately updated.

Thank you for answers. Here is what I did:

Repair disk permissions, OK

Make sure Office is up to date (12.1.2) OK

Apply the OS X 1.5.4 COMBO update

Ran Software Update which said my software is already updated.

Repair permissions again.

OK

I tried once again to save a .docx-document to .doc. It works fine with a new docx. It might seem that the problem only occures with one document. I tried to copy all content (Select All) to a new document, and then the same thing happens. I'm not able to recall the problem with other documents...

I'd also be interested in knowing why you believe you need to save as .doc

What updates/version is this? My "old" Word is version 10.1.8. I tried to look for updates, but found no support/downloads for Word X... Word X will not open any of my .docx-documents.

I'd be very happy for suggestions on further investigations...

Thank's - problem solved!

I didn't find out about the corrupt file. Tried the solutions you refered to, but with no luck.

The XML File Converter did the job however:

- Converted the file using XML File Converter to .rtf
- Saved the .rtf to .doc and the .doc to .docx within Word
- The result is a .docx-file that works as expected, without any crash.

I had a similar situation. I actually ran my corrupt document through Apple's Pages program, and then exported as a .doc file with little formatting error.
