It's a corrupt document:

Try this:

1) Create a new, blank document

2) Carefully copy everything EXCEPT the last paragraph mark in the bad
document.

3) Paste into the new document

4) Save under a new file name.

That should fix it. If it doesn't, it may be a bad picture or a bad table.
Come back and we'll get serious with it.

Hope this helps

I am experiencing this problem with a new document, which couldn't be
a corrupt document. I've deleted my Normal template so that Word could
build a new one. I also cannot save as "RTF," so I imagine the problem
lays somewhere else. This is good advice if it is a corrupt document.

It could still be a corrupt document!

If your Word 2004 Normal template existed on your computer when Word 2008
built its Normal.dotm template, then it would have copied the Word 2004 one.

If it did that, then it actually is very likely to be corrupt.

Try this:

1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

2) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer,
and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has
no extension.

3) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have
moved it, it should be in
~/User/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

4) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

5) Now re-start Word 2008 and it should be OK.

Hope this helps
