Word 2010

Has there been any significant differences
in Word between the 2007 and 2010
versions that would influence whether a
high-school age student find a disadvantage
for not paying the bit extra for 2010?

There are some small useful differences, but as most people do not use but a
tiny fraction of the power the applications provide, I cannot see it making
much difference to the average user.

If it's a question of upgrading from an existing copy of 2007 to 2010, then
no, probably not necessary. OTOH, if you're starting from scratch buying a
computer for a high-school-age student, you're unlikely to be able to get
anything besides Office 2010, and it just makes sense to start with the
latest available version to achieve the longest support life and slowest
obsolescence.

Suzanne,
I've been trying to find the "Professional Academic Version" for
$80 that was posted by Amish. I'd like to buy 7 licences for
students at our local high school. Can you point me to where I
can buy the PAV version of Office 2010?
Thanks,
Bill

Have you considered clicking on the "How to Buy" link on the referenced
page? But unless you are a college/university student, which it would not
appear that you are, then you are not eligible. Your school system may have
other means of buying volume licenses directly.

"But unless you are a college/university student". That was the catch
in my search that I somehow missed. No, these are high-school
students.

The discussions regarding volume licensing are really convoluted to
the point where one more-or-less throws up one's hands. I'll try
again. (It appears that the license expires in two years, which
boggles my mind to the point where I don't trust what I'm reading
in the provided guidance charts.)

Thanks,
Bill

I hadn't seen the two-year expiration part (I assume this is in reference to
the Professional Academic version?), but it confirms my suspicion that this
is like the cocaine sample the dealer gives you to get you hooked. It's
especially insidious in that it's not like there'll be a new version along
in two years that you would buy at the same price.

One of the "catches" of the Home & Student Edition is that it is not
eligible for upgrade, so you have to buy the full version of HSE every time
or pay the full price for another version. Not that upgrade prices are
anything to sneeze at, either, but a hundred or two compared to, say, $500
is still a better deal.

FWIW, volume licensing info is at

Suzanne,
I went through the automated "build a quote" for Microsoft® Office
Professional Plus 2010 Sngl Academic OPEN 1 License
and was quoted $77/license for 8 workstations. Looks great, except it
doesn't then tell you where to place an order. I'll look
some more.
Thanks,
Bill

That sounds like the way to go. I think the trick is probably to identify
the closest MS sales office and deal with them.

Oops!!! The quote of $77/workstation is for 1 year!!!! After 3 or 4
years, we would have spent $308 per student! Some academic
discount.......sounds like your cocaine example.

Schools do manage it, so I'm sure there is another way. There is surely some
sort of academic program for secondary schools.

A bit late into the conversation, but there is a rather important bug in the
saving of documents in Word 2010 when it comes to equations. As a result of
this bug, the entire document becomes corrupted and Word can no longer fix
it. Someone with XML knowledge can still fix it by hand, but it is a rather
annoying thing.

So if you often create or use documents containing equations (I'm taking
about the 'new' equations, not the ones you get through the old OLE object)
you might be a lot better of sticking to Word 2007.
