Word 2K crash after picture edit

This has happened consistently: I insert a jpg into a Word
2000 doc, then open the graphic via right-click/edit
picture, and do some annotation, like letters over
elements I want to highlight, or an oval over another
highlighted area. I save, close the edit window, then save
the word doc again. Not immediately, but within five or so
minutes, Word catastrophically closes. Am I doing
something offensive to Word? Any idea how I can avoid this
in the future?

I always suggest, when using Office for *real* drawings, to put the drawings in a PowerPoint presentation. Use Powerpoint to edit, etc. One pic on each slide so you can have them organized. Then, you can select all the objects on the slide, group it, copy it, go to Word and Paste special, as a picture (JPG is best, I guess). Keeps your Word doc from becoming too heavy too, but also maintains an editable version of the picture (what if you make a typo?) for you until your doc is completely finished.
