Word 97 cannot change Page Setup

I have been working on a problem all day with no answers. I change the page setup margins and paper size, which insists on being 8" wide x 1' high, push OK, go back to the page setup and it is the same as it was. I have pushed the "set as default" button, I have brought up the Normal.dot file, changed it, saved it as the articles in this discussion group have suggested--nothing seems to work.

I know that somewhere Word is being told to keep the settings where they are, I just cannot find that somewhere to change it.

I am running Word 97 on a Windows XP operating system. The system also has Microsoft Works on it.

I would be most appreciative if someone could help.

Thank you,
dsl

This problem is now solved with the solution to my previous posting of having WORD97 close when trying to save or print--

The answer was deselecting the option to run WORD in Windows 95 or 98, etc. in Explorer|Program Files|Microsoft Office|Microsoft Word|right click Properties|Compatibility tab|deselect "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"

All functions of the program seem to be back to normal. And a big THANK YOU goes to Suzanne S. Barnhill for her perspective on the problem!

Thanks to Beth Melton for discovering the cause of this problem.
