Word 97 continually get message box that "Word is closing--sorry"

I have been unable to correct the problem of Word 97 closing whenever I go to save a document or try to print it. I have worked through all of the fixes regarding deleting the regedit items in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/8.0/Word/Data; renaming the Normal.dot file, and anything else I have been able to read in the Knowledge base or these postings. I keep sending the error report, but do not know how I can retrieve help from it.

Is there any other reason why Word keeps shutting down on me.

I have Word 97 operating on Windows XP. Microsoft Works is also installed on this computer. When I got to save a document the save box will take only the first letter of the file name and no more. When I push save the error report box comes up and shuts down the program.

Thank you for your help.

Hi, dsl. If you read my reply more carefully, you will see that I did
not suggest that Works was causing the problem. I was talking about the
WORKS IN WORD SUITE ADD-IN, which probably remains installed even after
you uninstall Works.

Thank you, garfield-n-odie, for your patience. I hope you have a bit more--I am unable to find a "Word Suite Add-In" in the list of programs in the Add/Remove section of the Control Panel. I assume it should be very obvious the way you mentioned it. I even brought up the WORD install wizard to look in the items you check and uncheck on its install--nothing there.

Am I not looking in the correct place? I have a "Small Business Edition" of Office97 I have installed WORD, Excel, and Publisher for it. Can I give you any other clues to help?

Thank you for your patience and help. I do appreciate it!

Hi, dsl. The next things to check/try are:

1. If you are running Norton/Symantec Antivirus, disable the OFFICE PLUGIN that comes with it. Do not uninstall the antivirus program, just disable the OFFICE PLUGIN. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=329820 if you need instructions on how to do this. Does Word still crash?

2. Change your default printer to another printer. Or delete and reinstall the printer driver for your current printer in Start | Control Panel | Printers. Does Word still crash?

3. Follow the steps listed in http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Although this article appears to only address startup problems, damaged templates or registry keys can also cause the behavior you're describing.

Write back and tell us what happens.

Thanks, Garfield-n-odie--

I am truly feeling like a hopeless case. I do not have Norton--I have McAfee. But I still disabled it yesterday to see if that was it. . .and Word still crashed.

I have a Canon i470D bubblejet printer. Yesterday I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Still Word crashed.

The http link to the FAQs could not open (the page could not be found), but I have already done everything in the Knowledge Base Article 290771 entitled, "Word 2000 or Word 97 stops responding when you try to start it"--I have renamed the Normal.dot file and deleted the Word Data Key in the registry editor.

Thank you, again, for all the time you have given this problem!

The single-letter filename problem occurs when Word is set to (Windows 95)
compatibility mode in Windows XP. Instructions from Office MVP Beth Melton
for correcting this:

To rectify:

- Locate WinWord.exe
- Right-click and select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab
- See if you have a Compatibility Mode set
- If set remove the tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode"
