Nope. I may be slightly off here but the symptoms are an indication that
Windows is running in Safe Mode - but it obviously isn't the problem this
time. You haven't had a virus in the last few months have you? If you open
Word from Start, Run and type in
winword /a
and press enter, does that let you save documents with a proper name?

I am running Windows Xp in normal mode. All my other programs are fine,
including Excel which I use often, as well as the other Office Suite
programs. Would running in safe mode help? Or do you have any other
suggestions?

I have the same problem with Word (but other Office 97 programs are
fine).
I open a doc, edit, then it crashes. Also I can only save documents
with a
single letter name. If I type BusLtr1, it's saved as B. I think this
has
been happening osince around the time I upgraded from Windows ME to
Windows
XP Home Edition, although I can't swear that one caused the other.
