word 97 D "file is already open"

every time I open a word doc in xp, I get an error
msg. "(file) is being used by (owner). Do you want to
make a copy? I have a similar problem with Excel 97.
The program is fully functional after I close the error
msg. Any ideas?

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
File Associations need to be recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
