Word 97 Doc won't open in Word XP (sp3) - Error Message

1) Documents were created in Word 97
2) Attempt to open in XP (Open Word, File, Open)
3) Receive the fpollowing error message "The document name or path is not
valid". These are known, good files that can still be opened in 97.

I have tried "winword /r" to no avail.
I have tried open and repair
I have tried opening a blank document and selecting the "Insert File"
function.
I have turned off the Norton Office Plugin

ANY assistance would be appreciated. This is driving me nuts.

Hard Drive - our network utilizes Windows Server 2003. I don't know if that
makes a difference, but I thought I would throw that in.
