Word 97 on Windows XP will only save documents with a single character name

Paul Whitehead

When using Word 97 on Windows XP when saving a document, no matter
what I type in, the filename is truncated to a single character (e.g.
a.doc)!!??

I have no problem in opening files (after re-registering the
application).

Any ideas ??

Paul

Hi, Paul. This problem is usually caused by the Works in Word Suite Add-in. To remove it, click on Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

This problem occurs when Word is set to (Windows 95) compatibility mode in
Windows XP. Instructions from Office MVP Beth Melton for correcting this:

To rectify:

- Locate WinWord.exe
- Right-click and select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab
- See if you have a Compatibility Mode set
- If set remove the tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode"
