Word 97 password Protected files

I have word 97 on a winows XP pro computer this computer replaced a Windows
98 PC recently. I used to be able to open a password protected file in read
only mode but now the computer just sits there unable to open the file I
require. It opens none password protected document no problem and other
workstations on the network can open the document in read only mode

Any help would be apprciated
