Word 97 startup difficulties

I'm running into an odd problem. Here at work, we use Office 97, an
one of the computers is having difficulties loading Word 97.

When trying to open, the program begins initialization just fine, bu
then the screen goes back to the desktop. However, the Word 97 bar i
down on the system bar. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and i
still happens. After reinstalling, and starting the program for th
first time, the Office Assistant pops up and gives the usual options
and when I select "Start Microsoft Word", the office assistant goe
away but the program never completely loads up. (When starting th
program it never even goes to the initial Word screen with menu bars o
text area or anything)

However, when loading Excel or PowerPoint or any of those, they star
up just fine. I rooted around in the Registry to see if anything wa
amiss, and didn't see anything out of the ordinary in there either.
Any ideas?

We're using Windows 2000 Professional.

Thanks!
Mart

I've gone through the FAQ you have listed under David's similar proble
thread "Word 97 won't open". I've tried everything suggested in tha
particular thread, as well as the FAQ, and it just doesn't seem to b
quite the problem.

However, the winword /a does bring up the program just fine. I'v
tried renaming the normal.dot file. I've trie
updating/changing/deleting the registry entries. Basically
everything except putting a size 10 through the computer (somehow,
doubt that would be a good option).

I really would hate to have to set up a completely new PC just becaus
of &*@%ing Word problems. I appreciately any help you ca
give/suggest.

Thanks,
Mart

In your case it's most likely that the Word window is opening off-screen.
Right-click on the Taskbar button. If Maximize and Minimize are available
but Restore is grayed out, then this is the problem. Open any other window,
then right-click on the Taskbar and choose Cascade. Once you can see the
Word window again, use the mouse to move and size it to your preference,
then quit Word. When you restart Word, it should be where you left it.
