Word 97 Startup

R

Roger Johnston

I am trying to run Ofc 97 on a Win95B PC and am receiving
the following error when trying to start Word. All others
(Excel, Access) work fine. "Winword.exe has cause and
invalid page fault in module (unknown) at 0000:50596025".
I have deleted the "DATA" key in the registry. There is
no "normal.dot" to delete, the ACL files are not the
problem and starting Word with /a has the same problem. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled, all to no avail. When
first installed, right after word puts up the window
to "start using word" and I click on it, I get the error.
I thereafter get the error when Word is started.

Any help appreciated.

I'm exceedingly skeptical about your statement that there is no Normal.dot
to delete. Although Word 2002 doesn't create a Normal.dot till you customize
something, this was not true of Word 97. You should find Normal.dot in the
folder specified for "User templates" on the File Locations tab of Tools |
Options. If you're not seeing it there, make sure that Windows Explorer is
set to display hidden and system files (though this shouldn't be an issue in
Windows 95 or Office 97).

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I was
surprised to find no normal.dot file myself. I have
Explorer set to show ALL files. I have done a search for
all .dot (*.dot) files and it did not show up. I even
went through, manually, each of the folders under MSOffice
and could not find it. I copied the normal.dot file from
another PC (Ofc 2000) and placed it in about 6 places to
see if I could get another error message. No such luck.
What I did find when I did a search for *.dot was two
other files, ~normal.dot. This, after I added the
normal.dot (as above) and tried to start Word. So, it
appeared that Word was accessing hat file, or was trying
to do so, but I still got the error message and Word shut
down.

Well, this is even more puzzling. Are you saying that even after copying
Normal.dot to specified locations, Windows Find is still not finding it?

Hi Suzanne, no what I am saying is that I copied the
normal.dot file from another PC running Word and put it in
several places to see if that would help the problem, OR
if it would change the error message. Yes, "Find" does
find it, but it did nothing for my problem.
