I HAVE INSTALLED WORD 97 ON MY DAUGHTERS COMPUTER, SHE IS
A POET. WHEN SHE IS TYPING, WHEN IT DROPS DOWN AND STARTS
A NEW LINE, IT CAPITALIZES IT, EACH TIME IT STARTS A NEW
LINE. DON'T NOW WHY, IT DOES THIS ALMOST ALL THE TIME.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APRRECIATED.
THANK YOU

Please don't SHOUT! By default, Word is configured to capitalize the first
letter of a sentence. When you begin a new paragraph (which is what you are
doing when you press Enter), Word assumes the new paragraph begins a new
sentence. There are two ways to get around this:

1. Disable this option in Tools | AutoCorrect.

2. Better: Use a line break (Shift+Enter) at the end of each line instead of
a paragraph break (Enter). Use a paragraph break only at the end of a
stanza. That way you can add some Space Before/After to the style used for
the stanzas so that there will automatically be space between them (you
should never press Enter twice to get space between paragraphs). This also
makes it much easier to add indents to stanzas (to visually center them)
since you need do it only once for the entire paragraph.

First little point is netiquette: all caps is considered SHOUTING: it is
also easier the read text using correct case. Thanks.

When you reach the end of a line and manually want to start a new line,
pressing the ENTER key is telling Word that you want to start a new
paragraph or Sentence: so naturally, it capitalises the first letter of the
new sentence.

Obviously, this isn't what a poet always wants, so there are two
alternatives here. First, you can use Shift+Enter which inserts a Line Feed
rather than a paragraph break, so the next line won't start with the
capitalised letter.

Alternatively, if you go to Tools, AutoFormat, you can deselect the option
to 'Automatically Capitalise the first letter of a sentence'.

In fact, a third alternative is to use the Undo command (Ctrl+Z) as soon as
the capitalisation occurs which will tell Word to reverse the automation.
