word alignment in tables

Hi there:
I have a table of names and phone numbers that I want to improve the
alignment on.
I want some of the names aligned left, and some of the phone numbers aligned
to the right. It would also be great to have leading ... between the 2.
I have not been able to find out how to do this yet. Any tips?
I don't think it makes any difference, but the names and phone numbers are
all different lengths.
Also, how do I keep someone's phone numbers from being split between
columns? For example, the name and phone number will be on one line, and the
fax number on the next line. How do I stop the fax number from being pushed
to the top of the next column, leaving the name and phone number at the
bottom of the previous column?

Thanks in advance!
John

Hi =?Utf-8?B?Sm9obm55Sm9tcA==?=,

I'm not clear on how the second part is occurring, with things being pushed to
the "next column". But to left-align/right-align pairs you'd want a single
column, not two.

Select the column and insert a right-aligned tabstop at the right edge
(Format/Tabs), with a dot-leader.

When you enter the information, press Ctrl+Tab to insert the tab character into
the table cell.

Hi Cindy...
I forgot to mention that the columns are "newspaper columns", hence the
bottom line of one being pushed to the top of the next when I add a line.
Thanks
John

Ah, that makes sense, then:
how do I keep someone's phone numbers from being split between

Select all the paragraphs *except the last* that make up a single
entry. Format/Paragraph/Line and Page Breaks and activate "Keep
with next". (The last paragraph should NOT have this, in order to
allow the first paragraph of the next entry to break to the next
column)

Also, you don't want to use empty paragraphs between entries.
Instead, set the "Space after" or "Space before" for the first
paragraph of each entry.

A better approach is to make each address block a single paragraph (with
line breaks at the ends of the lines instead of paragraph breaks, then
format the style as "Keep lines together." Note that this will fail
(annoyingly) if columns are balanced by a Continuous section break and a
single address block falls on a page. I have a directory set up this way,
and whenever the last address is the only one on the last page, I have to
add an empty paragraph to balance the columns and prevent that address block
from splitting.

Hi Suzanne,

There's also an issue with this approach if you want to use different
paragraph styles...

Different paragraph styles for what? The lines of the address block? Could
you accomplish the same thing with character styles?
