Word always prompt that document is being used

Hi!

I have XP with office 97.
Word always prompt, when opening a doc, that it is being used by ....,
do I want to make a copy?

The machine is stand alone, not connected to the net or anything,
still this. It is preffered not to upgrade word on the computer.

Can anyone explain?
