Could you supply a little more information. What is it that's not opening:
Word or Adobe?

Is this the full version of Acrobat or just the reader?

If it is the full version, is the problem during conversion to a PDF?

If it's the Reader, is it your PDF that's not opening?

it is the full version of adobe acrobat 5.
word documents will not open.
it is not during conversion to pdf. the word documents simply will no
open during normal use.
the documents have not been converted to pdf.

the only thing adobe really has to do with the problem is that th
problem only occurs after it is installed

It might have something to do with your SHIFT key being broken too ;-).

Have you downloaded the patch updates for Acrobat 5.0? The initial releases
of that product nearly always have problems with Office integration.

If something doesn't make sense, it could be worse e.g.
