word and excel problems on office professiuonal 2003

if i double click either excel or word files they don't open, i get folder
not responding, some times after about 1 min the program launces but the
files do not appear. If i open word or excell then open file the file i want
opens immediately. Sometimes if i open the program and open load a file the
file i was trying to open but failed suddenly appears. I am running XP pro
and use McAfee. If anyone can help i would be grateful as getting very
frustrated and ready to throw the pc on the ground and phone the insurance
company ;)

Hi Cliffy38--

What version of Office are you using? Have you tried Help>Detect and Repair
if 2003 and prior or in Office 2007 Help>Office Diagnostics?

Often, particularly with Office apps, specific error messages can help you
match up with MSKBs (Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles on how to fix
problems). Are you getting any specific error messages with more detail
than "failed" that you describe suddenly appearning?

Go to eventvwr.msc in the run box in XP, or type event viewer in Vista
search if you're using Vista and in XP Application and in Vista click and
expand "Windows Logs" in the left pane>and click on "Application" and use
the down error to look for Excel or Word errors.

I overlooked you're using Word and Excel 2003 in Office 2003. That means
you can try Help>Detect and Repair and see if you can retrieve any specific
errors using Event Viewer that will help fix this if Detect and Repair
can't.
