Word and other Office products not running

I keep hitting an error: "Microsoft Office Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience." How can I fix this? I can't run
Detect and Repair because the error occurs before D&R can
run. I've tried installing a new version of Word (Office
2003 Pro) over the old version (Word 2000), but I still
get the same error. I need help!
