Word and Publisher won't work offline. Any fixes?

I'm using Office 2003 on an XP laptop. Everything works fine when I'm
connected to the internet, but Word and Publisher won't work if i disconnect
from the internet.

Make sure you have a printer driver installed and set as the default.

When I switched my default to the "local" version of the printer driver Word
worked for a short time before giving me the error. Publisher still didn't
work.

My daughter suggested making my pdf generator my default printer. I will try
that tonight.
