Word attachments do not open first time.

We're running Outlook 2k3 with Exchange 2k. When
openning word doc format attachments the first attempt
always fails, the dialog box says 'can't locate the file'
but the second attempt always succeeds. This doesn't
effect any other file format. Opening word docs from the
hard disk or network works first time. Can anyone assist
me in understanding why this might happen, or better yet
know the sollution?
