Processor: intel

I understand that Word 2008 has a function that will recognize passive sentences and change them to active sentences. How do I use or activate this function? thanks!

I believe what you're thinking of is the Grammar Checker, which is a part of
the Spelling proofing tools, not an AutoCorrect feature. Passive voice is
one of its aspects.

If you go to Word> Preferences - Spelling & Grammar you'll find settings
which include *check* as you type but not *correct* or change automatically.
The passive option is in the list of Grammar & Style options you'll find
when you click the Settings button.

The automatic Grammar Check applies a green wavy underline but violations re
also caught during regular Spell check. The green underlines can be
Control/Right-Clicked to make corrections.

This is one feature I turn off I think is down right silly.
writing bylaws and working Rules in an Organization using Passive voice
naturally sound better and more reasonable.

Also I tend to write anything in Word in Passive voice. In most cases
the suggested replacements are some times silly and alway change the
meaning an tenor of what is being written.

Hi Phillip:

You only say that because you are an old fart, Phillip :)

Modern "plain English" which is what rules and bylaws should be written in,
works better in active tense. Much easier for readers whose native language
may not be English.

Passive tense can get very convoluted: difficult for people who are not
native English speakers.

Cheers

I am rather old 59 and I do Fart a lot (especial if I eat Cabbage,
turnip greens, Brocalli, Pinto beans with onions).

But I did Rewrite our bylaw's and Working rules allowing Word to suggest
active tense word in place of the passive voice ones. when submitted,
all that proof read the changes said it Completely changed the meaning
of the passages corrected.

One person that did the proofing was a former Woman TV shop owner
operator out of New York (now lives in Raleigh, NC) who last name is
Cicchetti. (sounds similar to spaghetti) at one time she was a President
of a National Electronics Association. (So she knew a thing or two about
Bylaws and working Rules.

Yeah, if you really believed what you're saying, Phillip, you would have
posted:

This feature is turned off by me

bylaws and working rules should be written
Anything in Word is written by me in passive voice

The meaning and tenor are always changed by the suggested replacements.
You *are* a wag!

Hi Phillip:

While supporting information is often good, that was too much detail :)

Take care!
