Word ballooning file size

When I update links to 14 Excel graphs in my Word report and then lock the links and save the document, the file size shoots up from 5mb to 148mb. It has not done this before and is causing alot of waiting time to save changes.

I have checked that fast save & track changes are switched off and they are.

Can anyone think what the problem might be or offer any solutions.

sounds as if the document may have become damaged. If you copy/paste all but the last
paragraph mark into a new document does that help?

I have done a clean install of office xp and the same problem occurred when updating the links so the problem is happening in office 97, 2000 & xp.

Thanks Cindy - I will try your suggestion. Although the doc is 180 pages and includes over 100 graphs & tables - I will write a small test document first and update the links then save it to see if the file size balloons.
