Word cannot open the existing "

If I open Word everything is fine. I used to be able to
open another seperate copy of Word, so I would have two
application Windows. In the last week or so I have been
unable to do so as when I try to open the second window I
get the message

Word cannot open the existing "

then there's just a square.

Any suggestions?
