Word checks for something on internet

I used to open a 2.5 Mb Word 97 document (with images and text) quickl, but
recently something has changed. whenever I open the document a couple of odd
and annoying things happen:

* The document takes AGES to open
* The internet connection goes to nearly 100% for a few seconds
* Finally the document opens and calmly displays itself

What is going on with the internet? How do I stop Word trying to access
something on the internet? What is looking for anyway?

I don't want my application looking for anything on the internet without my
specifically asking it to.

Thanks in advance.

Well no replies, but I seem to have solved the problem. I had set the
Service "DCOM Service Process Launcher" to Manual startup. Word is clearly
not very happy when this happens. After changing this, the document loads
much more quickly.

Thanks,
Alain
