Word Closes Instead of Saves

My Word has stopped saving documents. I'm doing nothing different. Instead of saving, it closes on me. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?

The only thing I can suggest is to download and apply the 12.2.0 Update from
the Microsoft website.

That will stir things up enough to at least give us a clue as to what is
going wrong: currently we have no indication at all.

I suspect that the Preferences have corrupted and Word is "Crashing" on
save, but apply the update and we will find out.

Additional to John's reply it could also be a fault of OS X and/or the
condition of your HD file system.

There's no indication in your message of the OS X update level [which should
be 10.5.7] or whether you've run anything such as Apple's Disk Utility to
repair permissions or verify your disk. Is there anything about your system
that may have been changed at about the same time the problem started?

Try using Word in a different User Account to see if you experience the same
behavior there. Also, launch Word while holding the Shift key to see if the
failure to Save persists. Reply with your results & the requested details.
