Word closes on insert picture

In Word 2003 it seems you can only insert a picture if the file is
in "My documents/ my pictures". Any other location and it says Word
must close. Is this normal? No real inconvenience to me as I just copy
the files to "my pictures" before doing the insert, but it might help
others experiencing the same thing.

I haven't had such a problem at all (I routinely insert pictures from other
folders), but what might make a difference is if the "picture" is just a
link to a file (online, say).

No, these are .jpg files. I seem to remember it happening with Excel
too. The "Word must close" box comes up while selecting the folder,
before it even knows what type of files it contains. Strange, but I'm
really not that bothered.

If it hangs on selecting the folder, then that's a different issue. It could
be related to having disconnected network drives in the path.
