When I open an existing document and send it to print, Word closes
When I cut and paste part of a document into a new document, then go to SAVE AS, Word closes. I can't even print it
This problem just started yesterday.

We need a little more information. What version of Word are you using
and which patches do you have installed? (Take a look under
Help/About).

Do you encounter an error message? If so what is the error message?
Can you think of any changes you made yesterday? Did you install new
software or update any drivers?

I am using Microsoft Word for Windows® 97. As far as patches, I don't know. I looked under Help/About, but wasn't sure what info was relevant. Sorry!

I get a message that says "Microsoft Word for Windows 97 application file has encountered a problem and needs to close."
When I click on Get data report, it reads:
AppName:winword.exe
AppVer: 8.0.0.3514
ModName: winword.exe

I appreciate any help you can give!
Thanks, Sharon

Hi Sharon,

If you do not see Microsoft Word 97 SR-2 then Word is not fully
patched. (Actually, if you have all patches installed including
security patches then in the Copyright statement you will see (QFE
9125).
s
I do suggest you update Word through at least Word 97 SR-2 at some
point. There were a *lot* of bug fixes in the patches and Word 97
becomes much more stable with the patches installed.

What you are encountering may have been fixed by a patch but the best
way to determine if the error you are encountering is actually caused
by Word or if it is due to a third-party conflict is to start Word
using the /a switch. This will start Word using all defaults. Go to
Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the errors still occur then you should first obtain the patches and
see if they resolve the problem. Here is some information: on how to
obtain all of the updates:

SR1: http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/9798/sr1off97detail.aspx
SR2: http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/sr2off97detail.aspx
Post Service Release (QFE 8909):
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/Wd97mcrs.aspx

If the errors do not occur then more than likely the problem is caused
by a third-party add-in. Take a look under Tools/Templates and Add-ins
and see if you have any global templates in the list. If so they will
be located in one of two startup folders: Office\Startup , which is
located in the Office installation path. or the Word Startup folder.
You can find the location for the Word Startup folder by going to
Tools/Options/File Locations. (You can also use Windows Search to
locate the add-ins.)

Once found, move the template(s) out of the Startup folder to prevent
it from loading when Word starts.

Thanks! After I downloaded the patches and rebooted the computer, it worked.

I appreciate your help,
