word closing itself down randomly

I'm running Office 2000 Professional on a Windows XP
machine, and have been having problems with Word crashing
frequently. The computer isn't frozen, but the program
shuts itself down without my asking it to. When I reopen
Word, it often reports that there has been a change in my
normal template, and would I like to revert to the saved
one or use the new version?

This problem primarily occurs when I try to close a
document, but can also happen randomly while I'm working
in a document. It seems to be made worse by cutting and
pasting into Word from email files or Web pages.
Yesterday, the program crashed every time I tried to type
a quotation in a footnote.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office, restored XP to
a time point before the problems began, and installed all
updates for XP and Office, all to no avail.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Probably just a house keeping issue. First make sure that you have the
latest drivers for your graphics card and printer: download and install any
newer drivers.
Then clean out your temp directory and hard disk of all abandoned temp
files. As you have been having regular crashes, there are probably hundreds
of them. Delete them all. Then run a full SCANDISK and follow that with a
full Defrag.

Test Word again. If you get another crash, try renaming your normal.dot as
normal.bad.
