Word constantly crashes during track changes

Word crashes constantly during track changes or large document editing. By large I mean maybe 100 pages of text, some charts and no pictures - maybe a few mb. OS X and Office are up to date and I have repaired my disk permissions without any luck. This same thing is happening on four different computers. By crash I mean it shuts down and we send the report.

If you're fully updated & disk permissions are repaired the next most likely
cause of crashing while in use is a corrupt document - or a document with
corrupt content. The Track Changes feature is one that can contribute to the
problem, especially if it is perpetually enabled through continuous revision
by multiple users. A few of the other possible causes are described on this
page along with methods for uncorrupting a document. I'd suggest beginning
with Procedure #1 on one of the problem files to see if it makes a
difference, follow with the others as necessary:

Hmmm... Tracking Changes is the quickest way I know of corrupting a
document. Once you have corrupted the document, Word will indeed crash
every time you edit the document.

If you are working in the old .doc format, it is much more likely to
corrupt. If you are changing a document containing tracked changes between
..docx and .doc, it's practically guaranteed that the document will break!

A document of only 100 pages is not really much of a challenge to Word: the
limit is somewhere north of 2,000 pages (I have made a 5,000 page document
in Word).

However, you need to de-corrupt that document:

1) First, make sure you have a copy of the document before any changes
were made.

2) Then use the Reviewing toolbar to "Accept all changes in document".
Yes, you will lose all the tracked changes: but the alternative is to lose
the whole document.

3) Immediately save the document and close it (to clean out the now-removed
tracked changes).

4) Now complete all your changes with Track Changes turned OFF.

5) When you have completed ALL the changes, save the document.

6) Then use Compare Documents to insert change marking that will show the
differences between the original and the final version.

Since the changes are all added in a single operation automatically, there
is much less chance of corruption, but don't be tempted to change file
formats

Problem fixed. Several things have gone bad with these documents. we send them back and forth via email and some of the people are opening and saving in .docx, some can only save in .doc. With a little bit of people management we can avoid the corrupt files.

We were done with the projects that were crashing but I did check one document and it was indeed corrupt. Hopefully we can avoid the corruptions in the future. Thanks for the help.

Excellent! Glad you got it sorted...

Try to persuade them not to use Tracked Changes, especially in the old .doc
format. Documents won't last long if they do.

And try to persuade them not to change document file format if they can
avoid it (which is not easy in a mixed environment...)

I'm having this same problem, but the presented solution is not an option. I have to work in tracked changes. There is no other way. Period. Am I just screwed?

That could be due to font conflict specially if you are using any font to text rendering program like suitcase fusion or fontExplorer you can remove the problematic fonts here is a workaround http://funbird.co.uk/tech-articals/...-word-for-mac-crashing-due-to-font-conflicts/.

if it doesn't help change to design view and only have view for track changes when you need them
