Hello,

Lately, every time I save a new doc or save changes to a recently created doc, upon Save Word Crashes and I get the error message below.

I have seen this question posted many places, but only replies have been to uninstall/reinstall (did that) or to update to v.12.2.0. I have 12.2.0, the most current update.

Is there a patch or workaround? This is extremely frustrating. Hoping someone may know a solution. THANKS!

Crashes on save can be attributable to updates but that isn't the only
consideration. Since you are fully updated there are 3 other likely issues;

1- Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions,

2- You may have a corrupt Preferences file or Normal.dotm template. See the
info here for testing/resolving if that's the problem;

http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html

3- A problem with your User Account - If the above doesn't resolve the
problem try running Word from a new/different User Account.

Reply with your results. BTW: I'm not sure where you found suggestions to
reinstall Office for a problem of this nature, but reinstalling is *rarely*
the approach to take. There are certain conditions where reinstalling is the
last resort, but in most cases it causes more problems than it cures.

Bob,

Thank you for the quick reply. I am hoping the problem may be resolved per your recommendations. I tried all, except the last.

I should clarify one point (for anyone who has a similar problem and views this post). In my first comment I mentioned it happens "every" time I try to save a new doc. I was not fully paying attention to my choice of words - it was a frustration comment I think. It happens a lot - but not every time. Important to note, as your (Bob's) recommendations, especially the testing the Normal template, would affect me more so if my Save issue was "every" time. In any event:

1) I ran Disk Utilities, repairing permissions. I had actually done this a few days ago when the problem was first occurring. So I ran it again. I then opened a couple new docs - and saved. No problem thus far.

I then opened a couple existing docs that had been crashing on save. I type a few characters and again it crashed on save.

But perhaps my New docs are now clean and will stay that way.

2. I next did the Preference folders - then tested New and my problematic Existing Docs. New docs, no problem. Existing docs that had issues crashed immediately upon save.

Then I did Normal Template. Same results. New = good save. Existing, problematic = crash.

3. I was uncertain how to do the last recommendation - create a new user account. I know how to do this in Entourage, but not sure how in Word, nor found any help files on this for Word.

Side note... I have had this version of Office for about 10 months, with the latest update most likely installed within a week of when it was available as I have my updates set for Auto.

Thanks for the help. Perhaps all my new work will be clean and my problematic docs are now just too corrupt.

THANK YOU!!

It sounds to me like your last statement pretty much sums things up - you're
dealing with some corrupt documents. This page provides you with some common
causes [there are plenty of others, such as continuous use of Track Changes,
repeatedly reformatting directly, problem graphics, etc.] & potential fixes:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html

If Normal or Preferences were at fault you'd be experiencing the problem (or
others) with new documents as well.

Regarding the new account, this isn't something done in Word or any Office
program. I was referring to a creating new Mac user account through System
Preferences. It's a troubleshooting technique that helps pinpoint where a
problem actually lies... But in this case it shouldn't be necessary.

My "crash" situation is different. I use OS 10.6.1 with Word 2008 and
all the updates. The crashes take place only upon saving ("save" or
"save as") a "doc." file into a "docx" and vice versa. I work in a
large "windows" medical center where I receive both doc. and docx.
files. I have done the usual permissions repair and created a new user
account where the crashes persisted. It does not happen when I try to
saye a ppt. file into pptx. I would appreciate any suggestions.
