Word crashing after 12.1.2 update

Processor: Power PC

Word crashing after 12.1.2 update. It is not a document-specific crash, as it never successfully stays open (it launches, brings up a blank document, shows some palettes, and then crashes).

Excel and Powerpoint are fine. I tried Shift-launching Word, and deleting some of the recommended preferences. No luck.

Any suggestions?

Here's the error log [to shorten it, I deleted the 105 or so "Loaded modules". Let me know if they are needed to troubleshoot]:

Can you try setting the language of your document to a different
language to see if it still crashes??
The log mentions the Japanese Proofing tools repeatedly in the thread
that crashed so I am wondering whether there is really a relationship,

Thanks for responding. The program does not stay open long enough to change any language settings, and remember, I mentioned that it is not document specific. Even launching from the Dock does not succeed.

Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem as you. From reading the crash log, it appears to be a
problem with the Japanese Proofing tool. I found out a workaround to the
problem:
To stop Word from loading the Japanese proofing tool, go to
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Shared Applications/Proofing Tools
and move JapaneseProofing.proofingtool into a different folder. For some
reason, when I tried switching the extension, Word would still load it, and
thus rendering a crash. I ended up moving it to the main "Microsoft Office
2008" folder and leaving it there just in case I need to put it back into
Proofing Tools for a future update.

Hope this helps...

John

dT:

You hit the nail for the solution right on its head! Bravo! I moved "JapaneseSpoofing.proofingtool" out of its folder, and Word stayed open and seems (mostly) normal. There's been a weird database error message popping up occasionally since moving the above file, but that error message might or might not be related to moving the file.

Thanks again for writing back the solution!

Sorry, but tacking a "me too" onto an old thread doesn't provide the
information needed for anyone to help you. You need to submit a New message
& provide specifics on your exact OS X version as well as some descriptive
info about the content of the document.

Does this happen with *all* documents or just this one?

What file format are you saving in?

What else can you offer? Crash logs are primarily for programmers, they
don't tell much that's useful for anyone else.

I appreciate all of the above but I have the same problem and I can't seem to sort it by using any of the 'solutions'. I open a document and the rainbow wheel spins and spins and then in the 'force quit' window, which I leave open knowing that I'm going to need it, I get "Application (Word) not responding". All since installing the 12.1.2 update.

See the troubleshooting steps here:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/Diagnose.html

By jumping into another thread on a different subject, is already convoluted
& not providing any OS & system information that's about all there is to
offer. What you mean by "all the above" & "solutions" is vague so we don't
really know what you may have tried or what the actual results were.

Please follow the suggestions in my previous message in this thread - post a
NEW message with all pertinent information so you can have a 'clean slate'
in which to get your issue resolved.

Thanks for the extra detail:

It's a bit difficult to figure out what you were doing in Word when that
happened...

I cannot understand why Word would be loading Simplified Chinese or
Japanese. Can you think of a reason? There are also a series of imaging
modules being loaded: does the document have pictures in it?

Cheers

This will happen before any document has even been opened. Launch Word and it just hangs and then, in 'Force Quit' window, says 'not responding'. If I try to double click on a Word document to open the application, the same thing happens. I have now just installed the 'critical' 12.1.3 update - it's no better.

Hmmmm....

OK, I will send you the same answer I just sent someone else. This is the
"Scorched Earth" fix.

Whatever it is, if it's caused by Office, this should fix it.

I am not sure what's happened there: I am picking that one of the components
of your software has gotten out of synch with the others.

1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

Sadly the only thing I can suggest is to run the Remove Office utility and
start again.

You must run Remove Office, or you'll make the problem worse!

2) Run Remove Office TWICE to make sure it finds everything. Remove Office
is in a folder on your CD, and is also in a folder in your Office 2008
Application folder.

3) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer,
and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has
no extension.

4) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have
moved it, it should be in
/Users/ ~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

5) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

Then Repair Permissions with Disk Utility.

Then re-install, and reapply the 12.1.0 and 12.1.5 updates, in that order.

Repair permissions again, and it should work.

Be thorough with this, if you leave any of the old files behind Word 2008
will find them and won't replace them. Do it right and Word will construct
a new, clean, set of preferences and everything should now work.

Cheers
