Word Crashing on Exit

I'm running Windows XP Pro, Office XP everything is fully
patched to the latest version.

Word is leaking memory at a horrendous rate, gOpen a 264
KB File, go for a cup of coffee and the process is taking
up 127 meg by the time I get back. I can only make very
small numbers of edits and have to save or it will not be
able to close the document.

I suspect ActiveSync may have something to do with it,
version 3.7 currently running over USB. Am also running
EndNote.

Any ideas anybody.
