word date insertion

G

greg

every time i open a saved document word automatically
inserts the current date. Then I do not know when the
document was originally made and I cannot go back to show
the original date. I have turned off the autoinsert
feature but this is still happening. What can I do?

Also every time I close a word document I get a message
that it is in use by normal, yadda, yadda, yadda, and do I
want to save the changes of the global template and so on.
How can I avoid this and just close the document without
going through all this?

Greg,

The date issue is due to a {DATE} field in the document. Press ALT+F9 to
toggle field code (the date will change to {DATE}). Change {DATE} to
{CREATEDATE}, right click the field and press update field. This should
toggle the field code again and display the date the document was created.

The message on closing is a result of you selection in Tools>Options>Save
"Prompt to save Normal Template. You can uncheck this if you want to, but
it is like taking the batteries out of a smoke alarm because the noise
bothers you. Something is causing changes to your normal template when you
are using Word. You should try to isolate and fix the problem vice
silencing the alarm.

Greg,

You haven't mentioned any problem with Word crashing, but sometime it is a
good idea to do a little house cleaning. Have a look at the methods here
for clearing up unused temp files and other such nonsense:

http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm

I advise that you check the options Tools>Options>Save>Prompt to Save Normal
Template. It is a first line of defense against unknown and potentially
harmful activity. If the message pops up "Changes have been made to the
Global Template. Normal.Dot. Do you ..." and you don't know what the
changes are, then click "no" until you find out.

The reason for the change could be self induced (e.g., you make a new
AutoText entry) or as a result of an add-in. Two common culprits are the
Norton Office Plug-in and the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word. Check
if either of these add-ins are present (Tools>Templates and Addins) disable
them and see if your problem is cleared up.
