Word Dialog Boxes don't appear

I have got a windows management problem with Word. When
it needs to bring up a dialog box (for example to save a
file or to print) the program hangs and the icon at the
bottom of the screen blinks. If I minimise the main Word
window and then restore it, the dialog box comes up (but
not the main word window). Once I have dismissed the
dialog box, I can get the main Word window back. After
the first time, dialog boxes work properly. This problem
doesn't seem to occur with the other Office programs.

I am running Word 2000 on Windows 2000.

Any suggestions?
