word doc with 'password'

I received a word document from someone who can no longer be contacted.
I was told that it is 'a word document - password merlin'. What does
this mean and how can I retrieve the document? It came as an attachment
but when I try to open it I get 'unexpected error'

Try saving the attachment to your hard disk, then try opening it. The
'unexpected error' suggests that the document is corrupt (word documents
sent as attachment are prone to this). If the document opens correctly
you'll be prompted for the password.
