Upon further examination of file details it appears that
all my old files have the same "last modified" date but
the newer files have different dates and are being listed
chronologically rather than alphabetically. How do I
change the display of files to alphabetical order?

If you're in Details view, click on the Name header. If you're in any other
view, right-click on an empty area of the pane and choose Arrange Icons > by
Name.
