Word document printing ! after each number

We have a Mac computer using Word 2004 where every time you format it to number, it prints out an explanation point right after the number: 1.! 2.!. However, the ! point doesn't appear on the screen. We've tried printing to different printers and have made sure we have updated print drivers. We've also repaired permissions and run Norton's antivirus on the computer. Any other ideas?

I suspect the numbering formats have been fiddled with by someone.

Go to Format>Bullets and Numbering and select each sample in turn, then
click "Reset". When you have finished, save and Quit Word. If you get
prompted to save the Normal template, say "Yes".

If you are using this at school, chances are this won't work because the
computer may be set up to replace the template each time you login. And
it's the replacement that's bad. So you would need to talk to the
administrator.
