Word document unreadable

best

Hi All

Office 2003

A Word document in an email attachment is unreadable. It opens but the
charachters are square and non sense. No tther Word document is affected. I
ran all the updates, it made no difference. I forwarded the same attachment
to an other machine, it opens and reads fine.

Any idea please?

Thanks

Hi Best,

The issue may occur under several situations. The most common causes are:
1. The code in the Word document cannot be recognized on the computer.
2. There is special settings in the Word document.
3. Others.
Let's perform the following steps to narrow down this issue and resolve the
issue. Your patience and cooperation will be appreciated.

#1: Make sure that the regional and language Options setting is same with
the other machine which works fine
----------------------------
1. On the problematic machine, go to Start > Control Panel > Regional and
Language Options.
2. In the Advanced tab, in the field of 'Code page conversion tables', are
the checked items same as them on the working machine. Select all the
items. Click OK.
3. If it asks for the Windows installation CD, insert the CD to finish it.
Test the issue again. What is the result?

#2 Re-save the Word document as *.html or *.rtf format on the other machine
to test the issue
-----------------
1. On the computer which you can read the Word document, open the file.
2. Click File > Save As to save it as a file *.html or *.rtf.
3. Are you able to read the file *.html or *.rtf now?

#3 Refer to the steps in the following KB article to see if you can open
the Word document properly.

926909 You cannot open a document in Microsoft Word 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;926909

If possible, forward the attachment to me at [email protected]. Also,
take a screen shot of the window when you open the Word attachment and the
characters are square and non sense. If you get any error when opening the
document, also take a screen shot for me.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

Hi Best,

Thanks for your reply and the excellent screen shot.

It seems that the issue is related to the font setting. Please open the
file on the working machine. Which font is set on the Word document? Set
the fonts for all the texts as Arial. And then open the file on the
problematic machine. Are you able to read the Word file with the font set
as Arial?

If the issue is not related to the font, please forward the specific Word
document to me so that I can perform further research on it. Thanks.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,
