Word document won't open

Elaine

I posted this query a while ago, and other people have
also had the same problems which they've asked about on
this newsgroup, but so far, having trawled through them, I
can't seem to find an answer to the problem:

I can't open a certain document in Word XP that I saved in
in a previous version of Word).

the error message reads:
"the document name or path is not valid. try these
suggestions. check the file name for permissions to the
document or drive. use the file open dialog box to locate
the document."
(C:\ . . .\MyDocuments\filename.doc)

I have tried File>open.
The path of the document hasn't changed.
There is no password/protection on it.
But other Previosuly created Word documents have opened
without this message...

Still hopeful for help on how to get into it...(short of
uninstalling Office XP & re-installing 97 or 2000). Maybe
there's a patch I need..?

If you're opening it from Windows Explorer rather than from Word's File Open
dialog, then you may need to reregister Word. On the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open box, type

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash. Word will not start,
but it will reestablish its association with the .doc and .dot file types in
the Windows Registry.
