Word documents frozen

I have Microsoft Office XP Pro SE (2002) loaded on a
Windows 2000 PC. I started experiencing problems with
Word files freezing up, first intermittantly which
progressed to every time I try to open a new or existing
file. I can type one or two letters and then it freezes.
If I do Control, Alt, Delete and cancel out of it, often
it unfreezes and I can type another letter or two, but
then it freezes again. I have tried all the fixes that I
found listed but nothing helped, including uninstalling
both Office and Windows and reinstalling. I then
reformatted the hard drive and started fresh, hoping that
if it was due to a corrupt Registry, then the problem
would be fixed. But exactly the same thing is happening.
I have spent so much time on this and I still can't use
Word.

Now I am wondering whether it is a compatability problem
with other software. I have Adobe Acrobat 5, Symantec
Antivirus Client, and the All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500DV
installed. Has anyone heard of incompatibility issues
with these products?

I hope someone can help!
Thanks, Sue

First question is have you installed all the servicepacks and updates for
both Windows and Office? Second question, is this Symantec Anti Virus client
part of Norton Corporate Edition? Are you on a network or are these local
documents? Have you installed a default windows printer driver?

Yes, I have installed all service packs and updates for
both Windows and Office.

Yes the antivirus program is the Norton Corporate
Edition...I am licensed for my work computer (which is on
a network) and for my home computer which is not on a
network...my instructions from our computer tech was to
choose "unmanaged client" and I did that.

As for printers, I have two - an HP LaserJet 6L which
Windows recognized automatically (I did not have to
install a driver manually); plus HP OfficeJet G85 for
which I had to install a driver. Windows made the G85 the
default printer, but I changed the default to the HP 6L.

Does this help? Thanks for getting back to me so quickly,
Sue

From your description everything seems to be installed correctly, so this is
going to be a difficult one to diagnose. But here are a few ideas.

Sometimes a build up of abandoned temp files causes weird problems. You need
to clean out your hard drive to make sure that this isn't the case. Follow
the tips posted in this FAQ:
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm

Another possibility is one of the printer drivers (most likely the HP 6L as
it is set as the windows default). Check with the HP support site that you
have the latest driver and download it if necessary and then delete and
reinstall the 6L driver. If it gives you an option to HPPCL6 or HPPCL5e
language, choose the latter for this test.

I also suggest a visit to ATI support site and see if they have a newer
driver for the 8500 all in wonder and install that to eliminate a graphics
driver problem. When reinstalling it, make sure that it has set at least 256
colours, preferably higher.

Go to the Word Start-up folder and you'll find some third party templates in
there: definitely the Adobe Acrobat add-in. Rename them by changing the
extension from DOT to BAD. This will stop Word loading them on start up and
you can test to see if it is one of these causing the problem.

Finally, if all this fails, start Word in Safe Mode: use Start, Run and type
in

winword /a

and press OK. This launches Word bypassing all add-ins, custom macros,
templates and COMM add-ins, etc. Test and see if it is stable in Safe Mode.
That at least will confirm whether this is a Word problem or something
outside Word causing the problem.

We were experiencing similar issues at our office and it
ended up being only computers with some variation of the
ATI Radeon video adapters.

Once we downloaded and installed an updated driver from
the ATI website, all was fixed.

The graphics driver is a strong possibility. I would always recommend
keeping graphics drivers up to date to benefit from bug fixes and
performance improvement - exactly the same as with Windows and applications.
