Word documents nuisance: internet connection box appears

Recently the 'connect to' internet connection box opens
when the system starts up (before the password is entered)
and then appears up to three times each time a Word
document is opened or created.
There is no set pattern to this. Sometimes the 'connect
to' box appears only once, sometimes twice in succession
before the document opens, then once more after it has
opened. It has to be cancelled each time, regardless of
frequency.
At its most unstable, this box appears each time the
taskbar is clicked. At its best, it occasionally
disappears once the system has been operating a while.
I've tried defragging (several times) and have restarted
from a variety of restore points, all without success.
If anyone can suggest a way past this time consuming and
irritating malfunction I'll be very grateful

Have you checked your Internet Connection settings to see if your connection
to the internet is set to redial every seconds or few minutes? Right click
Internet Explorer (desktop) > Properties > Connection (tab) > (choose
connection) >settings > Advanced. Check to see if "Wait .... seconds between
attempts", set it to a reasonable connect gap.
