Word documents opening sloooooooowly

I've got word docs that are opening really sloooooowly.

They are doc that haven't been changed for years. If I copy the contents,
and save it as a new file, the new file opens much quicker, is about 10%
smaller, but when compared using word, has no differences!

has anyone else seen this, and if so what can it be??

yes.

And its not all documents. just some of them. but there is no common thread
between the docs that open quick and the ones that open slow.
