WORD documents remain in "spool" state; never print

After sending to printer, Word documents remain in "Spooling" state. I can
change to 'delete', but they then stay in that state. Can print successfully
with other programs. This happens periodically, no known cause.

This is most likely a problem with your printer settings or driver in
Windows and is not related in any way to Microsoft Word (or Microsoft Office
for that matter).

First, answer these questions:
What operating system are you running? Please be specific. (i.e Windows 98
SE, Windows ME, Windows XP, etc.)
Is your operating system up to date? (critical updates, service packs, etc.)
What version of Microsoft Word (or Microsoft Office) do you have?
Is your version of Microsoft Word (or Microsoft Office) up to date?
(critical updates, service packs, etc.)
Who manufactures your printer? (i.e. HP, Lexmark, etc.)
What is the model number of this printer?
Is this the default printer?
Is this printer connected via a network or is it a local printer (i.e. USB)?

Windows XP, Service Pack 2
WORD: 2002 (10.6612.6714) SP3
HP deskjet 6122 series on USB, default printer, and annotated as Active
printer in Word profile.
Hope this info helps!
I have also deleted and reinstalled print driver (new download) with restart.
I'm at a loss! Especially since it's happened before. When this happens,
spooler will fill but not release to print. However, I can STILL print other
Non-WORD documents.

In Microsoft Word, What are the checked (enabled) items in Tools ->
Options... -> Print (tab/page)?

Thanks, Bob ....now THAT makes sense. Will do that next time the ugly head
reappears.

Checked options are: Allow A4/Letter Paper Resizing; Background Printing;
Reverse Print Order; and Drawing Objects.
Don't I really want "Background Printing" to be ON? That's the purpose of
background, not?
I truly believe the problem exists in WORD.
Thank you for your interest. It is 'OK' now without any changes (except to
reboot). But it will happen again sometime; I'll have to monitor
circumstances, unless you spot an error in settings. Even though WORD
documents are at a standstill in the print queue, I'm able to print from
other sources.

I have the exact same problem...
I have Windows Vista though and am using Word 2007.
The printer is an HP F4280.

I can print the same documents on an my desktop pc using the same printer /
version of word etc but have just started getting the same spooling problem
as below when printing. I read the answers below re turning off background
printing but cannot figure out how to do this in Word 2007.

Can anyone help?! Thanks L
