word documents

I was working very fast yesterday and pressed something and have no idea what
button.
When I'm in the general document-symbols are showing up. The paragraph
symbol whenever there is a new one.
Arrows whenever I tab over.
Dots between the words to show spacing.
Many others as well.

I have searched and searched and just can't find where to look to turn it off.

Any suggestions?

And what version of Word? (It makes a great difference - you should
ALWAYS include the version you are asking about...)
