Word does not launch automatically

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

On my PortableG4, Word launches as soon as I double-click on a .doc file. It may also have done so when my MacPro but it no longer does. Instead it gives me a message that Word accidentally failed to launch (not the exact wording but that's the meaning). I must then launch Word separately from the Dock and only then can I open the file. How can this be fixed ?

First thing I would suspect - assuming you do have Word & OS X fully updated
- is that you need to run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions, then
restart your Mac.

If that doesn't resolve it please give the exact wording of the error
message.
